Many innovative designers have experimented with recycled construction materials as well as consumer materials that can be reused with a new function.  Not only are recycled construction materials important, but you must also take into account materials developed that are produced by using renewable sources. Many materials in the market have been specifically engineered and designed to use renewable raw materials so that we are able to keep our environment protected.

Developed by German company Tecnaro, this material is called “Arboform”. Commonly called – ‘Liquid wood’ It is a thermoplastic material that uses 100% Raw materials and goes through an injection moulding process for production.

Mosaic products using coconut skin with glass, travertine, and wood are produced as an alternative. Produced in a variety of sizes, the mosaic can be used as interior wall coverings.

Recycled leather materials are composed of mixture of leather fibers, natural latex, and Acacia tree bark as the binding agent to produce a stronger material.

Furniture cladding and wall cladding is a recommended use that can turn it into a signature piece.

Bendywood® is a completely solid wood product that can bend in cold and dry conditions. It can even be bent by hand and produced by a special mechanical process.

Biopregs is a bio-composite material that replaces metal and plastic sheets in several industries. The material is made by reinforcing bioplastics with cellulose-based fibers. This material can be thermoformed into panels, drilled, and cut simply as cladding, partitioning, or any other panel uses.

Celestial Night is a rug made by using 100% New Zealand Wool hand-tufted and integrating LED fiber optics in the weave. This product is fully customizable as it can be produced in any size with any number of LED colours and quantity wanted, although for the moment it remains an indoor rug.

With this very brief look at some materials that might be available to you, it is obvious that people are working to the same concept; reusing and recycling.

My past few articles have emphasized recycled products that have made it possible to keep any potentially useful materials around, but also to combine them and make it better. Thousands more products such as this exist and more solutions can be found very creatively with the exploration of products that are found at home. There are many innovative materials and technologies being explored, but Asia is not a very big market for such materials. It is key to be very respective of renewable sources and to find a way to study and develop them into accessible and user friendly materials. These renewable materials are being used to sustain the environment and using resources that regenerate rapidly so that crucial materials do not go scarce.
